Here’s David Blaine Freaking Out Will Smith, Kanye, and Bryan Cranston
The 2013 documentary David Blaine: Real or Magic chronicled the street magician’s brush with A-list Hollywood. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul, Harrison Ford, Ricky Gervais, and Kanye were all recruited to watch Blaine’s patented illusions in utter disbelief. It didn’t require acting. Blaine is a showman with a taste for danger. He loves sharp objects. He loves thrusting said sharp objects into various parts of his body. He loves the sound of jaws hitting the floor.
Blaine’s cruelest trick was keeping Real or Magic off the Internet for two years. Now, thanks to his official YouTube page, we can finally see what people who watched live television were screaming about way back when. The above clip sees Blaine performing one of the staples of his act. It involves cups, bystanders, and an ice pick. If you’re squeamish, stick to card tricks.
OK, you watched the clip. Now, how’d he do that? Blaine’s transparent when it comes to an explanation. Magic is not involved. The ice pick trick is 100 percent science. To pierce his own hand without bleeding, Blaine spent 13 years ripping through his skin and building up scar tissue. “There was a lot of trial and error,” he told TV Guide at the time. “It started with acupuncture needles. Well, actually, it started with a lot of MRIs and X-rays, mapping out everything in the hand. There are a lot of tendons and nerves in there.”
